Multi-events and race walking highlight Day 1 of USATF Youth Outdoor Championships

6/24/2014

Bloomington, IN -- The hot temperatures could only be overtaken by the heated competitions on day one of the USATF Youth Outdoor Championships on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, Tuesday, June 24, 2014.

Multi-events, steeplechase and race walking were all on tap for an eventful day both with the weather and on the track.

In the 13-14 boys pentathlon, Matthew Sadler dominated the first day, winning four of the five events to finish the day with 2,366 points. He started off by winning the 100 meter hurdles in 15.17 before throwing 11.14 meters/36-06.75 to win the shot put. He swept the high and long jumps as well, leaping 1.60m/5-03 in the high and 5.41m in the long.

In the 17-18 women 2000 meter steeplechase, Kieran Casey (Indianapolis, Indiana) ran an impressive 7:35.94, winning by almost 40 seconds. Ashleigh Resch (Beavercreek, Ohio) won the 17-18 women 3000 meter racewalk in 14:51.89.

In the 17-18 men decathlon, William Zamus Messer (Ashland, Ohio) also had an impressive day, winning the long jump with a 5.99m leap and the high jump with a 1.95m/6-04.75 leap, finishing the day with 2,930 points.

The combined boys/men 3000 meter racewalk produced a photo finish, with Cameron Haught (Yellow Springs, Ohio) and Anthony Peters (Bartlett, Illinois) matching stride for stride for the whole race. Anthony barely edged out Haught for the overall title with a 12:59.74 and first in the 17-18 men, Haught finished first in the 15-16 boys and second overall with a 12:59.83.

The weather made an appearance on the final race. With one lap to go in the combined boys/girls 1500 meter racewalk, lightning was spotted and competition was halted. After an hour and 20 minute weather delay, the races resumed with a combined girls and then combined boys race.

Day 2 of the USATF Youth Outdoor Championships starts tomorrow at 8 a.m.
